The Future of Prosthetics: Process, Sketchbook, Studio & Site work
In my first project at university (+1), I designed a type of prosthetic breastplate that was orientated around empowering the wearer, a woman who’d had to undergo breast removal surgery. I made what I thought would go into the V&A in 50 years.
Not a typical replacement, something explorational, powerful and unwaveringly bold.
I was engulfed by the intertwined themes of science, design and psychology, and now wish to take it further into spectacular, wondrous and theatrical realms. I am to simulate the physical and emotional feelings, feelings of power, femininity and strength in this piece and simultaneously create a non-confirmative and extraordinary wearable piece for anyone that does not, for whatever reason, have their own biological pair.
I found my research engaging and fascinating. As the project developed my research only made me more passionate about the work. Research, such as more technical medical procedures in the line of work, skin textures, weight, shape and size variations, enriched my aspirations for the project. Exploring a simultaneously more diverse but more refined approach in terms of the ornate attachments of the final prosthetic would be my next step.
