Most prosthetics in the early C21 were made as realistic or purely functional substitutions for a missing body part; however, some were redesigned to redefine this ‘disability’ and subvert a prosthetic’s typical purpose. The above is a breastplate that, when worn, aimed to empower women who had undergone removal surgery and wanted to reimagine the missing parts as fantastical works of art; instead of seeing what’s missing, seeing what’s there. The pride taken in wearing these pieces meant they became a unique form of power dressing.
